Ice Fishing on Moosehead Lake, Maine

Current Conditions

September 29th, 2016

Wilsons on Moosehead Lake reporting: Ahhh, Fall is in the air! The cooler nights have arrived. The days are growing shorter.  Leaves are starting to change colors. Critters are out and about more as the high temperatures have mostly gone and this prompts them to come out of hiding in the deep wooded, cooler areas. Buzz around camp is of fishing, hiking, relaxing enjoying the views and each other.

We have an online reservation system that is live. We have added guiding and boat rental options, and the cabins are ready to book 24 hours a day! We also have a new-to-us Pontoon Boat that is sure to make some incredible memories with guests and our Guide Staff. It has already seen an evening sunset cruise to area islands, and a "fun in the sun" day on Moosehead Lake with guests enjoying the water, hiking Mt. Kineo, and learning some history on the way.

Don't forget your bathing suits! We have a hot tub for all to enjoy. After a day of fishing or hiking, come relax while watching the amazing stars above. There are many exciting things going on here at Wilsons Cabins on Moosehead Lake, Maine. We couldn't be more grateful for folks choosing to make their memories here with us. We are looking forward to FALL 2016 and another incredible year of sharing our special piece of Moosehead with all of our amazing guests.

We have a drone, so we will share some sneak peaks of the goings on from time to time. Wi-Fi update!!!! We have a broadband system offering wireless Internet to our guests and all of the cabins.  We pontoon.jpgupgraded the system, so it now reaches everyone staying here and is password protected!   We also have set up more cabins with satellite TVs.  The year round cabins (excluding our 2 smallest) along with Lakeside Cabin, now ALL have TV!  Never thought it would be that popular here in the North Maine Woods, but it has become that way…so we aim to please!

We have expanded our guide business and the East Outlet Guide & Fly Shop has been a great compliment to the office. Now selling flies, leaders, clothing, coffee, snacks and more, along with gas & oil for snowmobiles, boats and ATVs! We are here to offer assistance for those who need a little helping hand.  Come see us and check it out!

We have added a pontoon boat to our guide fleet for amazing sunset tours or private lake cruises with an experienced Registered Maine Guide. No security deposit needed, and gas is included! Folks who aren't comfortable with boating are truly enjoying sitting back, relaxing, taking in the scenery and views while leaving the driving to us!

Attention Fishermen:

The current flow on the East Outlet is a very wadeable 1115 cfs. Fall is definitely here and big fish are being caught throughout the river. With fresh fish coming in the streamer fishing can be HOT! Fish that have spent their whole summer in the lake chasing smelt are dropping into the river and will be very aggressive. Classics such as the Grey Ghost, Red Gray Ghost, and Montreal Whore are great go-to's! Once the fish have spent some time in the river they tend to turn off to streamers, but nymphing will still produce steady fishing. Fall fishing means lots of changing flies, the nymph that absolutely slayed fish in one pool, might not turn a single fish in the next. Stay persistent and bring your extra tippet because throwing everything you have at them will pay off! I suggest bright colors, such as bright green, red, or pink as the fish tend to be very aggressive when spawning and these will trigger reaction strikes. Don't be afraid to switch it up and throw something they haven't seen a lot of.. big wet flies, tandom streamer rigs, and all kinds of other out of the norm setups have been working! This is the time of year to catch your biggest fish! Don't miss out!

The bass fishing has been absolutely amazing! This trip is a must-do! Clients who have taken the trip cannot stop raving about the sheer number of big bass caught and the amazing scenery! Soft plastic baits have been the ticket lately, but on a calm overcast day definitely don't rule out the possibility of some crazy topwater action! Don't miss out on some of the best bass fishing in the state on the most scenic river around!
