Moosehead Lake Area Fishing:
Helpful Hints and Travel Tips
(Below are guidelines only. Be sure to check with IF&W for exact dates and laws.)
*Ice Out is generally around the first week in May. It happened to be early in 2009 – April 26th!
*The Black Flies are usually at their worst around the first two weeks of June, which equals great fishing!
*If you’re planning your trip in hopes of seeing a Moose or two, May and June are your best dates to shoot for. Don’t count the rest of the summer and the fall months out, but you’re likely to be more successful in the spring.
Moosehead Lake Fishing: Opens May 1st and runs through September 30th.
Fishing for salmon is best right after ice out. Mid-May through end of June is fabulous.
Brook trout fishing is great during bug hatches in July.
More great fishing in September as the water cools.
Kennebec River Fly Fishing Only: Open Year Round!
(October 1 through April 30 - Catch & Release Only)
What to use for flies:
*Dry Flies-Memorial to mid-July, then again in September
*Nymphs and streamers (black and gray ghosts)-early May to mid-June then again in September and October
*September-Wolfs, caddis, dries, stoneflies, nymphs, emergers.
When fishing is at its best:
*May-June and then again in September and October.
October=Cast & Blast: Birds, rabbits, fly-fishing, and foliage at its peak…what more could you ask for!
The combination of unbelievable foliage, comfortable weather, and generally fewer people makes late season stays a very popular choice!
Small Mouth Bass Fishing: At its best June 1 to September 1.
